Savannah Self-Guided Walking Tour: App, Audio, and Map-Based Options

A Savannah self-guided walk means you choose the route, start time, and pace. You can use an audio or app-based guide, a simple map route, or a mix of both. This page compares those options and explains when a guided walk may be a better fit.

What self-guided means in Savannah

Savannah's historic district is built on a grid of public squares, live-oak-shaded streets, and easy-to-follow corridors. A self-guided walk puts you in charge of which squares you visit, how long you stop, and when you rest. It works best when you are comfortable reading a map or following a route on your phone and do not need a group or live narrator.

Self-guided is not a single format. You can choose:

  • Audio or app-based walks: Narration plays as you move from point to point. These often cost less than a guided tour.
  • Simple map route: You follow a route idea on public streets and sidewalks. This is the most flexible option and can be free.
  • Hybrid: Use a map for routing and occasionally reference an audio app for context at key spots.

App/audio vs simple map route

Audio or app walks add narration and structure. They are useful if you want to hear stories about the squares, architecture, and history without booking a live guide. Pricing varies by app, and availability can change. Check current details before buying.

Simple map routes are free and fully flexible. You can pause for coffee, take photos, and skip stops whenever you want. The tradeoff is that you provide your own context. If you just want to absorb the atmosphere and see the layout, a map route is often enough.

Neither option is "best." They serve different moods and budgets.

Suggested 2-hour historic district flow

This is a route idea, not an official or interactive map. Use it as a starting point and adjust for your pace.

  1. Start at Forsyth Park — the southern anchor with the fountain and shaded paths.
  2. Walk north through Monterey Square, then Calhoun Square.
  3. Continue through Chippewa Square, stopping to read markers or take photos.
  4. Pass Wright Square and Johnson Square, heading toward the river.
  5. End on River Street for river views and a place to sit. From here, you can loop back through a different set of squares or finish.

The route is flat and mostly shaded. It takes roughly two hours if you pause at each square and stop for photos. If you move quickly, it can be done in 60–90 minutes.

When self-guided works best

  • You want to start early, stop for coffee, or take photos without keeping up with a group.
  • You prefer quiet, independent pacing.
  • You are comfortable following a route on a phone or printed map.
  • You want to control cost by choosing a free map route or a lower-cost app.

When guided may be better

  • You want live storytelling and the ability to ask questions.
  • You prefer a structured route with a local guide.
  • You are visiting during a busy period and want a group experience that keeps moving.

Best time windows

Early morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable windows in warm months. Midday heat can be intense even in shade. Spring and early fall offer the best balance of temperature and manageable foot traffic. Winter is cooler and quieter. If you walk on a weekend, start earlier to avoid the heaviest crowds.
