Walking Context: Santa Fe
Walking Santa Fe means accepting the elevation — 7,200 feet above sea level. Early days may feel breathless; most people adapt within 48 hours. The Plaza is the anchor point. Galleries, cafés, and shops radiate outward in an organic street pattern. Terrain is gently rolling with occasional steep blocks; distances feel longer than they look. Summer (June–August) stays cooler than expected: 80–86°F with dry air and no humidity. Late afternoons bring short thunderstorms. Spring (March–May) and fall (September–October) hit the comfort zone: 70–75°F and crisp mornings. Winter drops into the 20–30°F range with light snow. The real constraint here is altitude on day one — hydrate, slow your pace, and don't overpack your route. Sun exposure is strong year-round at this elevation. Parking downtown is tight; walking is genuinely the easier option.
