Walking Context: Salem

Salem's downtown is compact — about a mile across and mostly flat. Walking fatigue is unlikely during a 2–3 hour exploration. Chestnut Street acts as the spine: tree-lined, calm, and easy to follow. Historic homes, the Witch House, and the waterfront cluster naturally, so navigation feels intuitive. Summer (June–August) sits around 75–82°F with manageable humidity; late afternoons feel warmest. April–May and September–October land in the comfort zone: 56–73°F and lighter visitor flow. Winter is cold (upper 30s°F) but walkable with proper gear. The real variable here is timing — October brings heavy Halloween crowds. Outside that window, visitor flow stays steady year-round. Streets are walkable; just stay alert at crossings where traffic moves fast.
