Walking Context: Richmond

Richmond is the largest city in this project, but still very walkable if you choose your neighborhood. Downtown is flat and compact. The Fan District stretches outward with gentle rolling blocks and wide tree-lined streets. Riverfront paths along the James River give you long, uninterrupted walking routes. Walking 3–4 miles here is realistic without fatigue; the variable is which district you want to explore. Spring (mid-April to mid-May) and fall (mid-September to mid-October) feel best: 65–75°F, lower humidity, clear days. Summer (June–August) runs hot and humid (85–89°F), with afternoon thunderstorms; mornings walk easiest. Winter (December–February) stays mild at 35–50°F with occasional light snow. Walking is never difficult here. The decision is whether you want historic streets, museum corridors, or riverfront paths in your route.
