Walking Context: Portland
Portland's walkable core sits on a compact peninsula with a Walk Score above 90. The Old Port is dense, brick-lined, and naturally walkable. The Arts District and Downtown stretch another mile, and the waterfront adds linear paths along Casco Bay. Terrain is mostly flat — walking effort is rarely the issue. Winter (December–February) is the real constraint: 20–37°F, heavy snowfall, and icy brick sidewalks. Sidewalks are cleared, but proper footwear matters. Spring (April–May) warms quickly: 40–66°F. Summer (June–August) is ideal: 70–78°F with comfortable humidity. Fall (September–October) cools to 50–73°F with foliage in full color. Locals move car-free year-round; visitors can too. Weather isn't a barrier here — just a factor to plan for.
