Walking Context: Charleston
Charleston's downtown is compact — about half the size of Savannah — with shorter blocks and steady foot traffic. Terrain is flat; fatigue isn't a concern. The waterfront promenade becomes your relief valve when historic streets feel tight. Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) sit in the comfort window: 65–85°F, manageable humidity, consistent visitor flow. Summer is hot and humid (87°F+); early morning walks work best. Winter (50–65°F) is mild and quieter — ideal if you value breathing room. The Battery is the natural entry point. King Street acts as the spine. Walking is easy here; the only real variable is how many people you want around you. Narrow streets have character — they just fill up in peak weeks.
