Walking Context: Asheville
Asheville sits in the mountains at about 2,200 feet. Downtown is compact but hilly — expect rolling terrain block to block. The historic core fits comfortably into a 0.5–1 mile walking zone, with shops, cafés, and galleries clustered naturally. The South Slope and River Arts District add variety if you want longer routes. Spring (March–May) and fall (September–October) hit the sweet spot: 60–78°F, lower humidity, clear days. Summer brings warm afternoons (75–85°F) with occasional spikes, but heat stays manageable. Winter hovers 30–45°F with occasional snow — walkable with a jacket. Weather and terrain are rarely the limitation here. The real variable is visitor density. Fall weekends fill the streets. Spring feels similar with fewer people. Walking works naturally in Asheville — just expect gentle climbs and rewarding views.
